Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at Hypoxi Newstead

Hyperbaric Chamber

Oxygen is the element most vital to sustaining human life. More essential than food or water, oxygen feeds the body and provides protection against a variety of harmful agents. This essen- tial element gives an athlete stamina, helps the injured heal and protects from environmental toxins. Oxygen provides the fuel needed by the brain to function properly and it helps the body fight off infection by boosting the immune system.

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a method of increasing oxygen intake by exposing the body to oxygen at a higher than normal atmospheric pressure, causing a super saturation of oxygen in the plasma and tissue fluids.

What is the benefit of increased
oxygen levels in the body?

There are several benefits to Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen, including:

  • Provides the fuel needed by the brain to function properly
  • Helps the body to fight off infection by boosting the immune system
  • Assists in post operative healing and sporting injury recovery
  • Aids in the treatment of chronic disease and maximizes the benefits of other modalities Promotes accelerated and enhanced wound healing
  • Decreases post-operative inflammation and infection and encourages normal healing processes

Chronic Conditions

Who needs Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Thousands of people have had dramatic and, in many instances, life changing improvements in their conditions because of Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Reasons to use hyperbaric chambers vary and currently there are over 80 conditions successfully treated with this therapy world-wide.

Functional and cognitive abilities can respond positively to treatment. Saturating the body with oxygen can boost the immune system, increase brain and neural function, and help cells and tissues heal and perform effectively. Because oxygen deficiency is often overlooked it is not seen as being a cause of chronic illness. Some symptoms that may result from oxygen depletion include:
Premature ageing, depression, fatigue, dullness and a general feeling of sluggishness. If the imbalance is chronic, the immune system is weakened, and we are more susceptible to long term chronic illnesses.

Mild HBOT for sports recovery

HBOT is an excellent aid in sports preparation and recuperation. It may help speed up recovery from sports injuries, provide faster recuperation from workouts, increase energy and mental clarity as well as general health, leading to im- proved performance.

HBOT acts in 2 ways… the increased pressure inside the chamber decreases swelling at the same time increasing the blood flow to restricted areas. The higher concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream allows the rate of healing and repair to occur much faster.

Although newly recognised in Australia, HBOT has become a widely popular performance en- hancing strategy among professional athletes overseas and amongst professional Australian
athletes, particularly in the AFL, rugby and cricket teams. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is popular in sports preparation, recovery and overall wellness. It may assist with some neurological conditions and cognitive improvement. It is safe and side effects are very rare.

Is it safe?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a safe, drug-free therapy that can be used regularly without any danger of oxygen toxicity. Proponents for Mild Hyperbaric Therapy include numerous doctors, health care providers and individuals for whom this therapy has been beneficial. No dangerous side effects have been reported with Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, however, some individuals can experience a few minor contraindications such as slight fatigue as the body detoxifies (this is safe and necessary). A per- son can also experience a mild discomfort to the ears when pressurising the chamber similar to the experience of ascending or descending in an aircraft.

What does the treatment involve?

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is completely natural, safe and well tolerated, with very few side effects. Sinus or ear pain may be experienced and can usually be relieved by using the same techniques when flying in a plane such as swallowing or opening and closing your mouth wide. ‘Ear Planes’ purchased from a chemist may also assist. The chamber is inflated and then pressurised while you breathe high levels of oxygen through an oxygen face mask supplied via an oxygen concentrator. Claustrophobia may be experienced by those susceptible to confinement anxiety. Any other side effects are rare with Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy but it’s advised to raise any concerns with us and consult your doctor, a chemist may also assist

Because you will be fully clothed during the treatment, it is recommended you wear loose, comfortable clothing. Ladies are best wearing a shorts or long comfortable pants. The chamber inflates within two minutes and upon full inflation there will be enough room to sit upright or to lie down comfortably. There is enough room for 2 people to be in the chamber at the same time. After the inflation, the chamber will pressurise, and this is a similar feeling to ascending or descending in a plane.

Once at full pressure, you just breathe normally. You may take a book or magazine into the chamber, meditate, listen to music, go on your laptop or simply sleep. Depending on your personal health goal, each treatment usually lasts for 1 or 1.5 hours and you can carry on with your day as normal.

How many treatments will I need?

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a cumulative therapy and the number of treatments you may wish to complete depends on your condition. There is no requirement for a doctor’s referral and you’re free to book sessions as you wish. The optimum manufacturer-recommended protocol for these portable chambers is to complete your first 5 sessions within 7 – 10 days,
after which they may be required less frequently. But ultimately you know your own body best, and so we allow you to choose your appointment scheduling based on what you feel is appropriate for you and your sense of wellness.

The story behind Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hi, my name is Chris and I am the Managing Director of Portable Hyperbaric Chambers Australia. I would like to share with you my story behind the company I started, and the reason why I am so passionate in making portable hyperbaric chambers accessible and affordable for the average Australian to own.

It all began back in 2009 when I almost lost my two-month-old son, Elijah, to an episode of (SIDS) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. As a result, he suffered a severe brain injury which was going to change not just his life but mine as well – forever. In need of emergency care, he was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne where he was immediately placed into an induced coma, in which he would remain for three months. After what seemed like an eternity the doctors decided it was time to wake Elijah from his deep sleep.

It was a challenging time for both my wife, Joy and I but nothing compared to what little Elijah was to face. Once woken, the doctors were to discover he was clinically blind and had severe spasticity, not to mention advanced developmental delays. In fact, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy amongst other things. This diagnosis came from some of Australia’s leading paediatric neurologists, who had all come to the same conclusion. Ultimately, they were telling us Elijah’s future would be bleak – news that no parent ever wishes to hear.

Refusing to accept the doctors’ prognosis of our son, both my wife and I set out to find a solution that would enable us to help our sons damaged brain repair. After years of feverishly searching the internet for an answer we came across something called hyperbaric oxygen therapy. We were amazed to hear about the results people were having from simply using hyperbaric chambers. Not just stories of brain damaged patients but stories of: Autism, Chronic Fatigue, Lyme Disease, Severe Anaemia, Osteomyelitis (Bone Infection), Diabetic Wounds, Necrotizing (Tissue Infection), Gangrene, Intracranial Abscess (Brain Abscess), Burn Injuries, Stroke, Heart Problems, Migraines, Sports Injury & Recovery. Just to mention a few but the list goes on.

Excited by what we had learned I immediately began to investigate how I could get my hands on the best and most advanced hyperbaric chamber available. Much to my dismay, no hyperbaric facility in Australia would treat our son. And where we could take him to have treatment, we were being quoted $25,000 for just three months of treatment. After endless hours of research on the internet and meeting people I knew our son would need a whole lot more than three months of treatment.

As a parent you would give anything to help your child, but $25,000 every three months was impossible for our family to afford.

So we began our journey to find a hyperbaric chamber that could actually give the results that researchers around the world were finding, AND just as importantly, one that was affordable that we could use on a daily basis. After a long and hard two years of research and development in our spare room we finally had a portable hyperbaric chamber we knew was going to do the job needed to get the results we wanted.

When it came time to put Elijah inside that confined space for the first time we did have some concern that he may not like it. But Joy jumped inside with him to help calm and soothe little Elijah. But there was no need, he loved it. Equipped with his iPad and other activities we had put in there to amuse him, no once did he refuse or show any signs of distress. We sent him down four meters below sea level that day and saturated his little body with 97% of life-giving oxygen, delivered in a very special way.

The results we saw were gradual and subtle. Initially he was sleeping better and his behaviour improved. He seemed to be more peaceful and his muscles didn’t ache or hurt as before. Slowly and incredibly his vision started improving and his walking gait also improved, then he started talking. All the things the doctors said he would never do again, he started to do one by one.

Three years later, and our brain injured, clinically blind son diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and global developmental delays, is now at a normal school doing amazing and he is walking, talking and has his SIGHT BACK!

Yes, that’s right, he is seeing! If you ever get to meet him, you would think that he is a normal little boy. After seeing the amazing results with our son, there was only one thing left for me to do…quit my job…which I did. And so, it was that Portable Hyperbaric Chambers Australia was born.

In the same year I took the very chamber that I had designed for little Elijah, named it the Salus36 and began full scale production, manufacturing 30,000 units a year. It is now the biggest selling Portable Hyperbaric Chamber in today’s market and is sold worldwide.

Throughout this whole amazing journey, I have always felt there would come a time when I would help others help themselves and their loved ones.

Chris Williams.
